There are many reasons an engine would need a rebore, oil or water starvation, bad injectors or even just high mileage.
Reboring enlarges a worn or damaged cylinder bore to a new bigger diameter, while honing finishes the surface to achieve the correct crosshatch pattern for oil retention and ring sealing.
When engine cylinders become scored or out-of-round, reboring and honing are necessary to restore proper compression and reduce oil consumption. Once bored bigger pistons can be fitted.
